"Ferocious Love: Feminine Images of the Divine"

Rev. Lee Bluemel preaching, Rev. Frank Clarkson assisting.

Join us for a Mother's Day service that invites us all to reflect on and celebrate the various women in our lives who have helped us on our way.

The sermon will look at a couple different images of the feminine divine-- including the ferocious Hindu goddess Kali and the quieter, nurturing Christian images of Mary. How do conceptions of the divine both reflect and impact ideas about human femininity? What do these contrasting images tell us about the role of religion in human lives? What happens when one image is dominant or missing in the collective consciousness of a society? What might these images bring to bear on the troubles of the modern world today?

Bring your own thoughts about which images of the divine shaped your religious ideas as a child, which images of the feminine have shaped our society, and what kind of Goddess you'd want to have on your side in times of trouble.

Music: The Adult Vocal Choir with John Middleton-Cox, directing.

Children's Worship: The young people will join us in the sanctuary for the story, and then proceed to the chapel to share birth and adoption stories with Mrs. Forsyth-Vail. These stories are preparation for next week, when they will be rehearsing a skit based on the story "On the Day You Were Born" that will be presented in church on June 1st.

We strive to continue our historical role of being catalysts for progressive change in the local communities. Through active personal involvement we advocate for social justice in our local communities, our nation and the world. We do this in the context of the Unitarian Universalist principles and from the perspective of our place in the intricate web of life.
