Dear good people of North Parish,
The sanctuary is ready for our neighbors from Congregation Ahavat Olam to hold services on Friday night and Saturday as they observe Rosh Hashanah, or the Jewish New Year. Their religious year begins with these ten days of awe or repentance- a time to take a searching and fearless moral self-inventory, to make amends, to give to charity, do acts of kindness and gather for worship. The high holy days culminate in Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement- a full day of fasting, worship, and asking forgiveness from God.
We begin our religious new year differently: with a community ritual we call “Water Communion”. In the world of religious ritual, it is brand new- only 46 years old. But for anyone who feels connected to the earth or a UU community, it is a ritual already imbued with layers of meaning. During the Water Communion service, we reflect not only about the water we bring and the sacred places/moments it represents but we also reflect about ourselves. What are we bringing with us to the community this year- what emotions, attitudes, intentions, experiences, joys and sorrows? What are we seeking? What might we need to let go of? How have we or our families changed? How do we wish to live this year?
If you have a few moments to breathe before you arrive on Sunday, I invite you to reflect about the last two months of your life- the highs and lows, the changes and familiar rhythms, the places or moments that felt loving or sacred. Is there anything you want your congregation, your minister, family or friends to know? Are there things you will be keeping close to your heart?
If you picked up some water, a stone or a shell at some point this summer, remember to bring it along. If you forgot- that’s OK! You can just bring yourself; friends are also most welcome. I think we all know that as a people, we’re going to be on a bit of a wild ride for the foreseeable future. May our community and our habit of gathering in the sanctuary offer some ballast to help keep your own ship steady and afloat!
