Message From Rev. Lee- October 16 2026

“The hero is no braver than the ordinary person, but he or she is brave five minutes longer.”

– Ralph Waldo Emerson, Unitarian, 1803- 1882

Some of us at North Parish meet monthly in small groups that reflect on resources about spiritual and ethical topics curated for Unitarian Universalists which are called “Soul Matters”. This month’s theme is “courage”, which seems apt. Maybe we all need a bit more courage these days.

A few of the reflection questions for this month are as follows. If you’d be interested in meeting once a month (either in person or online) with other North Parish folks to get to know them and their thoughts- and your own- on a deeper level, let me, Brittany or Rebecca know.

In what way do you wish your generation had been more courageous?

What is the greatest act of courage that you’ve directly witnessed?  Did it change you?

What fears did your family of origin pass on to you?

What fear takes up more space in your head and heart than you want? Is fear making your world too small?

Here’s one more question inspired by the Ralph Waldo Emerson quotation above. Emerson was a Unitarian minister from 1829 to 1832. He then left the ministry to be an essayist, lecturer, philosopher, abolitionist, poet and leader of the Transcendentalist movement. His words encourage me to ask myself: “When and where can I or we be brave – not braver than other people- but just five minutes longer?”

See you Sunday at the Meeting House,

Rev. Lee

P.S. Many thanks to the Worship Committee, the Choir and the North Parish members who led and contributed to the wonderful service last Sunday for Indigenous Peoples weekend. I was able to attend Parents’ Weekend at my youngest child’s college which was a real treat and then watch the service on our YouTube channel. Much gratitude!
