Message from Rev. Lee – November 6, 2026

“Some things seem too big to be felt alone- because they are.”

- Prentiss Hemphill

It’s been quite a week.

I had a birthday this past Tuesday. Leading up to it, I must admit I was feeling a bit of fear, dread and anxiety. My philosophy about birthdays is that everyone should get a birthday week because sometimes the actual day itself isn’t so great. I’m happy to report it’s been a great birthday week so far.

Sometimes the words we use to describe our Unitarian Universalist values- words like “transformation”, “pluralism”, “equity” and “interdependence” just sound like “church talk”- highfalutin aspirational words that we throw around so much that they start to lose their meaning.

Then every now and then we get to witness a real transformation- and feel the big emotions that go along with it. We get to see pluralism strut itself into the public square in all its beauty and energy and cleverness. We get an inkling of just how damn hard other folks have been fighting for equity while we went about our regular business. We get reminded of our deep interdependence with literally millions of people we will never, ever know and can never thank properly. And those highfalutin words put on everyday clothes- and boy, do they look good!

It’s been quite a week for our religious values showing up in the public square, in the voting booth, on stages across the country. An awful lot of people made that happen. Some of you helped make that happen. Thank you. In my book that’s worth a week of celebration!  And then, yes, it’ll be time to put our everyday clothes back on and get back to work- to meeting, planning, feeding, agitating, meditating, knitting, gardening, teaching, ushering, organizing, singing, raising money and raising hell and all the rest, watching our values turn into something real.

See you at the Meeting House, where sparkles and spangles are welcome.
