Social Change and the Urgency of Now

“We are now faced with the fact that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now. In this unfolding conundrum of life and history, there ’is’ such a thing as being too late. This is no time for apathy or complacency. This is a time for vigorous and positive action.” -

-Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., April 4, 1967

January is a time when many of us set intentions for the coming year. We also reflect on the inspiration of Martin Luther King, Jr. The Parish Council Mission Pillar (Climate, Immigration, and Racial Justice groups) invites you to consider how you can respond to the Urgency of Now as you set intentions for this new year. We’ll host a workshop on January 18, 11:30 am – 1 pm in the Chapel with lunch from Nan’s Kitchen. Explore the framework from the UU Common Read Social Change Now! in which author Deepa Iyer reminds us that being part of social change is one of the most important ways we can connect with each other. We can all engage in justice work no matter our experience, time, talent, or skills. In particular we’ll offer ways you can work for justice in four areas: food security, climate justice, immigrant justice, and defending democracy. RSVP to racialjustice@northparish.org so that we can plan space and food accordingly. Childcare will be available for this event.
