“Attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity.”
-Simone Weil
On Sunday I was able to join the elementary children as together they narrated a picture book about a boy who notices a woman no one else seems to notice; she is homeless and he brings her warm clothing. As they began to create “blessing bags” for us adults to have in their cars in case we drive by homeless folks, I switched over to the youth classroom where we talked about the whys and wherefores of UU understandings of Jesus. Some of the youth will be handing out clothes to folks without homes this weekend at City Reach. Our young people are having good conversations and doing good things together.
This week, those of us at the Meeting House have been watching the scaffolding go up, up, up. I am grateful to the Portuguese-speaking crew and tell them this daily. It’s been a cold and windy week to be carting metal poles around high in the air. It is hard work which will allow us to be cozy inside next winter.
As for this winter, it is just about officially over! This Sunday we’ll celebrate the Spring Equinox or Ostara, named after the goddess Eostre who was associated with fertility, the dawn, spring and new beginnings. Symbols of this holiday include- surprise!- rabbits, eggs, spring flowers and butterflies; practices include decorating eggs, planting seeds, putting out bird nest making materials, and airing out our homes/spring cleaning.
Even as the world lurches from crisis to crisis, the earth calls us back into balance. Day and night are just about equal length right now. It might be a good weekend to consider how we might regain balance, revive our energy, or seek renewal as individuals or as partners and families. The next weekend, some of us will gather in the sanctuary on Friday night and then take to the streets on Saturday as part of a mass action to demonstrate our determination to regain balance, energy, and renewal as a nation.
Yours on the cusp of a new season,
Rev. Lee
