Message from Rev. Lee – January 2, 2025

“We stand at a threshold, the new year something truly new, still unformed, leaving a stunning power in our hands: What shall we do with this great gift of time, this year?”

- Rev. Kathleen McTigue, UU (#544)

“The time is always right to do what is right.”

– Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

A happy 2026 to all!

As usual, it is hard to believe the new year has arrived. Some are likely making resolutions, some choosing “a word of the year”, some recovering from celebrations, others doing their mending, still others ignoring all of that and feeling perfectly fine! You may be looking into the new year with trepidation or hope, resolve, exhaustion, curiosity or in some other way. It is good we are not all the same. If you’re not sure where you’re at, I invite you to come sit in a pew and let your mind, heart and soul settle.

In January, our big holiday is the Sunday of the weekend remembering the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. along with all those who put their courage to the test as foot soldiers in the Civil Rights Movement. The “Soul Matters” theme for January is resistance, and the materials include this quote from Cole Arthur Riley, author of the book Black Liturgies: Prayers, Poems, and Meditations for Staying Human“Our resistance is not predicated on how likely it will be to alter the conscience of the oppressor. We resist to retain our own conscience. And to awaken all others who are still in possession of their own souls.”

What shall we do with this great gift of time, this year?  The good news: we can figure some of that out together.

Hope to see you at the Meeting House on Sunday,

Rev. Lee
