Message from Rev. Lee – April 10, 2026

“Hope locates itself in the premises that we don’t know what will happen and that in the spaciousness of uncertainty is room to act. When you recognize uncertainty, you recognize that you may be able to influence the outcome.”

– Rebecca Solnit

I suspect a lot of us have had enough of uncertainty this week, as national levels of anxiety surged up and down and back up again. I also suspect that this state of affairs is going to be with us for some time to come. If you haven’t done it yet, this is a good time to get rooted within real-life communities where sanity and respect prevail.

Writer Rebecca Solnit suggests “…in the spaciousness of uncertainty is room to act.” Perhaps the other side of uncertainty, then, is possibility.

This month’s “UU Soul Matters” materials are about embracing possibility. Here are a few of the personal reflection questions:

-Is there a book or book series from your childhood that made you think life was full of possibility?

-Has anyone ever told you- or made you feel- that certain possibilities were closed for you?  How did you respond?

-How did your family teach you to think about possibility? Did you pass this on to others? Might you expand this in just one way?

-Many of us tell ourselves “One day I will…”  What “One day I will” sentence has been with you the longest?

-Do you ever imagine what could be possible in the future? How might you- or we– influence that future into being?

Our visions can be powerful. We’ll share some on Sunday and I’ll look forward to the possibility of seeing y’all at the Meeting House.

Yours, Rev. Lee

P.P.S. On Sunday, I mentioned Biblical scholar Bart Ehrman as a source for information about how an apocalyptic Jewish preacher in Galilee was turned into God over decades and centuries. If you’re intrigued, this article about Ehrman just popped up: UNC-Chapel Hill’s Bart Ehrman Taught Students to Scrutinize Their Beliefs
