A “Postcard” from Rev. Lee

“Do not be too timid and squeamish about your actions. All life is an experiment.”

—Ralph Waldo Emerson, Transcendentalist & Unitarian

Photo of white candle in a blue chalice Greetings from my home office! The heat has finally broken as I write this, and my fan is on low. Hallelujah!

I thought I’d share a brief summer update. In early July, I applied to and then was accepted into a D. Min. (Doctor of Ministry) in Social Justice program through Meadville Lombard Theological School, a UU school in Chicago, IL. It’s been 30 years since I’ve been “in school” so I suspect there are some new things to learn… although my study muscles are a bit out of shape!

It is a remote program for working people with once-a-week online classes spread out over several years. I’ve decided to give it a try for the fall semester and see if the exposure to new ideas, students and professors is helpful, if the workload could possibly be manageable once I return to North Parish, and if I come up with a worthwhile project related to religious naturalism and climate justice that hasn’t already been covered by others. We shall see.

I was also able to spend a week of vacation time in the Adirondacks visiting my son (who has a summer job there), and my family is getting ready for our Big Adventure: a week-long trip to “the City of Rain”- Bergen, Norway, where two of my great-great grandparents sailed from for the U.S. in 1861, at the start of the Civil War. The family were undertakers so maybe we’ll visit some funeral homes. What else does one do in Norway?  ; )

I hope that you all are well and are taking care of each other. Many thanks to our summer worship leaders, the Green Envelope project leaders, the gardeners, the Board, the Caring Team, the summer staff and everyone else who is engaged over the summer. There’s only one more week until Li Kynvi arrives- Hallelujah!

In the spirit of experimentation, Rev. Lee
