SUMMARY:The 1619 Project - read and discuss with the Racial Justice Team!
DESCRIPTION:The goal of The 1619 Project is to reframe American history by considering what it would mean to regard 1619 as our nation’s birth year. Doing so requires us to place the consequences of slavery and the contributions of black Americans at the very center of the story we tell ourselves about who we are as a country. Join the Racial Justice Team in a series of monthly zoom meetings\, beginning in January\, to discuss this important work. Add the book The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story to your holiday gift wish list\, begin reading\, and stay tuned for meeting details in the new year. \nPlease click here for Zoom link.

SUMMARY:Monthly meeting of North Parish book/movie group
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the North Parish book/movie group.  We meet on the fourth Wednesday of the month from September to June. For more information and to obtain a Zoom link to the meetings\, please email BookClub@northparish.org. \nThe March book selection is Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger – 307 pages – 23 copies in library system\, 2 holds Frank begins the season preoccupied with the concerns of any teenage boy\, but when tragedy unexpectedly strikes his family—which includes his Methodist minister father; his passionate\, artistic mother; Juilliard-bound older sister; and wise-beyond-his-years kid brother—he finds himself thrust into an adult world full of secrets\, lies\, adultery\, and betrayal\, suddenly called upon to demonstrate a maturity and gumption beyond his years. Told from Frank’s perspective forty years after that fateful summer\, Ordinary Grace is a brilliantly moving account of a boy standing at the door of his young manhood\, trying to understand a world that seems to be falling apart around him.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the North Parish book/movie group.  We meet on the fourth Wednesday of the month from September to June. For more information and to obtain a Zoom link to the meetings\, please email BookClub@northparish.org. \nFebruary’s movie selection is Miss Juneteenth – 16 copies library. Can rent for $6.99 on Amazon Prime This movie is centered around a single mom\, a former pageant winner\, prepares her rebellious teenage daughter for the Juneteenth beauty pageant in hot\, sweaty Fort Worth\, Texas setting\, a community centered around family and tradition Nicole Beharie\, as the former pageant winner Turquoise Jones\, as she holds a cigarette\, shops for a used dress\, or watches her daughter perform on stage\, her face teetering between fear and pride\, helps evoke a rich inner life and a sense of history. Her interactions with her elderly boss\, her religious mother\, and her on-again-off-again boyfriend (a wonderful Kendrick Sampson) hint at a complicated web of broken promises and stalled commitments. Similarly\, director Channing Godfrey Peoples’s patient approach to the material draws the viewer in.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the North Parish book/movie group.  We meet on the fourth Wednesday of the month from September to June. For more information and to obtain a Zoom link to the meetings\, please email BookClub@northparish.org. \nJanuary’s book selection is All That She Carried: The Journey of Ashley’s Sack\, a Black Family Keepsake by Tiya Miles – 385 pages\, 29 copies in library system\, 3 holds Sitting in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture is a rough cotton bag\, called “Ashley’s Sack\,” embroidered with just a handful of words that evoke a sweeping family story of loss and of love passed down through generations. In 1850s South Carolina\, just before nine-year-old Ashley was sold\, her mother\, Rose\, gave her a sack filled with just a few things as a token of her love. Decades later\, Ashley’s granddaughter\, Ruth\, embroidered this history on the bag–including Rose’s message that “It be filled with my Love always.” Historian Tiya Miles follows the paths their lives and the lives of so many like them took to write a unique\, innovative history of the lived experience of slavery in the United States. As she follows Ashley’s journey\, Miles metaphorically “unpacks” the sack\, deepening its emotional resonance and revealing the meanings and significance of everything it contained. All That She Carried won of the National Book Award in 2021 for Nonfiction.

SUMMARY:North Parish Book/Movie Group
DESCRIPTION:Never Rarely Sometimes Always  – Rent from Amazon Prime for $3.99. 9 copies in library system. \nA quiet teenager named Autumn (newcomer Sidney Flanigan) looks like she carries the weight of the world on her shoulders. She’s introduced singing her heart out at a talent show—after her classmates have all either lip synced or done dance routines. There’s something melancholy in Autumn that’s not in most of her peers\, and her only friend seems to be her cousin and co-worker Skylar (Talia Ryder). It’s not long before we learn what’s weighing on Autumn’s mind—she’s 17 and pregnant. Eliza Hittman\, the writer/director of “Beach Rats\,” returns to Sundance with her best work yet\, a powerful drama that’s mostly a character study of two fully-realized young women but also a commentary on how dangerous it is to be a teenage girl in America. \nNorth Parish Book/Movie Group meets on the second Wednesday of the month.  Please email Suzanne Adams for Zoom info.

SUMMARY:North Parish Book/Movie Group
DESCRIPTION:The Jane Austen Society by Natalie Jenner \nJust after the Second World War\, in the small English village of Chawton\, an unusual but like-minded group of people  band together to attempt something remarkable. One hundred and fifty years ago\, Chawton was the final home of Jane  Austen\, one of England’s finest novelists. Now it’s home to a few distant relatives and their diminishing estate. With the  last bit of Austen’s legacy threatened\, a group of disparate individuals come together to preserve both Jane Austen’s  home and her legacy. As each of them endures their own quiet struggle with loss and trauma\, some from the recent  \nwar\, others from more distant tragedies\, they rally together to create the Jane Austen Society. A powerful and moving  novel that explores the tragedies and triumphs of life\, both large and small\, and the universal humanity in us all. \nPlease contact Suzanne Adams for Zoom info\, sue@gndhome.com \n
