SUMMARY:Monthly meeting of North Parish book/movie group
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the North Parish book/movie group.  We meet on the fourth Wednesday of the month from September to June. For more information and to obtain a Zoom link to the meetings\, please email BookClub@northparish.org. \nThe June movie selection is West Side Story – 54 copies in library Steven Spielberg films his cast against a gritty\, semi-realistic backdrop (complete with lens flares!)\, and we watch\, awed\, as the characters dance\, and sing\, and ultimately suffer horrible tragedies. There’s a cruelty to “West Side Story\,” as it’s ultimately the story of love that cannot survive in a violent\, hostile environment. As Anita sings\, “Life can be bright in America.” But not for these characters. But there’s plenty of life here\, too. In fact\, this is one of the most-alive movies in recent memory\, and one of Spielberg’s best\, too. And that’s saying something.

\nThe May movie selection is The Accidental Tourist by Anne Tyler – 355 pages – 12 copies in library system This 1985 novel by Anne Tyler that was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction in 1985 and the Ambassador Book Award for Fiction in 1986. The novel was adapted into a 1988 award-winning film starring William Hurt\, Kathleen Turner\, and Geena Davis\, for which Davis won an Academy Award. Macon Leary is a travel writer who hates both travel and anything out of the ordinary. He is grounded by loneliness and an unwillingness to compromise his creature comforts when he meets Muriel\, a deliciously peculiar dog-obedience trainer who up-ends Macon’s insular world and thrusts him headlong into a remarkable engagement with life.

DESCRIPTION:The goal of The 1619 Project is to reframe American history by considering what it would mean to regard 1619 as our nation’s birth year. DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the North Parish book/movie group.  We meet on the fourth Wednesday of the month from September to June. For more information and to obtain a Zoom link to the meetings\, please email BookClub@northparish.org. \nThe March book selection is Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger – 307 pages – 23 copies in library system\, 2 holds Frank begins the season preoccupied with the concerns of any teenage boy\, but when tragedy unexpectedly strikes his family—which includes his Methodist minister father; his passionate\, artistic mother; Juilliard-bound older sister; and wise-beyond-his-years kid brother—he finds himself thrust into an adult world full of secrets\, lies\, adultery\, and betrayal\, suddenly called upon to demonstrate a maturity and gumption beyond his years. Told from Frank’s perspective forty years after that fateful summer\, Ordinary Grace is a brilliantly moving account of a boy standing at the door of his young manhood\, trying to understand a world that seems to be falling apart around him.

Can rent for $6.99 on Amazon Prime This movie is centered around a single mom\, a former pageant winner\, prepares her rebellious teenage daughter for the Juneteenth beauty pageant in hot\, sweaty Fort Worth\, Texas setting\, a community centered around family and tradition Nicole Beharie\, as the former pageant winner Turquoise Jones\, as she holds a cigarette\, shops for a used dress\, or watches her daughter perform on stage\, her face teetering between fear and pride\, helps evoke a rich inner life and a sense of history. Her interactions with her elderly boss\, her religious mother\, and her on-again-off-again boyfriend (a wonderful Kendrick Sampson) hint at a complicated web of broken promises and stalled commitments. Similarly\, director Channing Godfrey Peoples’s patient approach to the material draws the viewer in.

\nJanuary’s book selection is All That She Carried: The Journey of Ashley’s Sack\, a Black Family Keepsake by Tiya Miles – 385 pages\, 29 copies in library system\, 3 holds Sitting in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture is a rough cotton bag\, called “Ashley’s Sack\,” embroidered with just a handful of words that evoke a sweeping family story of loss and of love passed down through generations. In 1850s South Carolina\, just before nine-year-old Ashley was sold\, her mother\, Rose\, gave her a sack filled with just a few things as a token of her love. Decades later\, Ashley’s granddaughter\, Ruth\, embroidered this history on the bag–including Rose’s message that “It be filled with my Love always.” Historian Tiya Miles follows the paths their lives and the lives of so many like them took to write a unique\, innovative history of the lived experience of slavery in the United States. As she follows Ashley’s journey\, Miles metaphorically “unpacks” the sack\, deepening its emotional resonance and revealing the meanings and significance of everything it contained. All That She Carried won of the National Book Award in 2021 for Nonfiction.

SUMMARY:The 1619 Project - read and discuss with the Racial Justice Team!
DESCRIPTION:The goal of The 1619 Project is to reframe American history by considering what it would mean to regard 1619 as our nation’s birth year. Doing so requires us to place the consequences of slavery and the contributions of black Americans at the very center of the story we tell ourselves about who we are as a country. Join the Racial Justice Team in a series of monthly zoom meetings\, beginning in January\, to discuss this important work. Add the book The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story to your holiday gift wish list\, begin reading\, and stay tuned for meeting details in the new year. \nPlease click here for Zoom link.
