DESCRIPTION:Come join the North Parish book group as we discuss the movie News of the World on Wednesday\, December 8 at 7:00 pm on Zoom. There are many copies available through the library system and you can also stream the movie on HBO Max. We hope that you will take a break with us from the busy holiday season. One reviewer wrote\, “There’s something comforting about giving yourself over to an undeniably talented group of artists for two hours and just letting them tell you a story.” Five years after the end of the Civil War\, Capt. Jefferson Kyle Kidd crosses paths with a 10-year-old girl taken by the Kiowa people. Forced to return to her aunt and uncle\, Kidd agrees to escort the child across the harsh and unforgiving plains of Texas. However\, the long journey soon turns into a fight for survival as the traveling companions encounter danger at every turn — both human and natural. \nJanuary’s book is Anxious People by Fredrik Backman\, the very popular author of A Man Called Ove. Host Cantor Vera Broekhuysen will lead the conversation with Lillian\, who will discuss her journey from Ecuador\, through Mexico and into the U.S.\, and the racism and sexism that she experienced in those countries. DESCRIPTION:In keeping with book group tradition\, we are alternating books and easily accessible movies for our meetings 7:00 to 8:00 pm the second Wednesday of each month during the church year. For the foreseeable future\, we are meeting via Zoom. Those who wish to join us are asked to read the books or see the movies on their own time. “Roma”\, which is set in the 1970s Mexico. From its opening frames to its closing ones\, it is a masterpiece of cinematic technique\, the story of a well-off family told through the eyes of its indigenous maid (Yalitza Aparicio). For a while\, the film seems like it will be principally an exercise in visual storytelling. But before it runs its course\, Roma will nail you to your seat. It will shock you. It will break your heart and then put it back together again. You will not see a better picture this year. \nNovember’s 10’s book is “The Book of Longings” by Sue Monk Kidd\, the fictional story of a young woman named Ana\, Judas’ sister\, who marries eighteen year old Jesus and moves in with his family. \nWe have a small but loyal group who join us each month and would love to welcome more to join our discussions.
