SUMMARY:North Parish Book/Movie Group
DESCRIPTION:Anxious People by Fredrik Backman \nLooking at real estate isn’t usually a life-or-death situation\, but an apartment open house becomes just that when a  failed bank robber bursts in and takes a group of strangers hostage. The captives include a recently retired couple who  relentlessly hunt down fixer-uppers to avoid the painful truth that they can’t fix their own marriage. There’s a wealthy  bank director who has been too busy to care about anyone else and a young couple who are about to have their first  child but can’t seem to agree on anything\, from where they want to live to how they met in the first place. Add to the  mix an eighty-seven-year-old woman who has lived long enough not to be afraid of someone waving a gun in her face\, a  flustered but still-ready-to-make-a-deal real estate agent\, and a mystery man who has locked himself in the apartment’s  only bathroom\, and you’ve got the worst group of hostages in the world. As the authorities and the media surround the  premises these reluctant allies will reveal surprising truths about themselves and set in motion a chain of events so  unexpected that even they can hardly explain what happens next.  \nContact is Suzanne Adams\, sue@gndhome.com

SUMMARY:North Parish Book/Movie Group
DESCRIPTION:Come join the North Parish book group as we discuss the movie News of the World on Wednesday\, December 8 at 7:00 pm on Zoom. There are many copies available through the library system and you can also stream the movie on HBO Max. We hope that you will take a break with us from the busy holiday season. One reviewer wrote\, “There’s something comforting about giving yourself over to an undeniably talented group of artists for two hours and just letting them tell you a story.” Five years after the end of the Civil War\, Capt. Jefferson Kyle Kidd crosses paths with a 10-year-old girl taken by the Kiowa people. Forced to return to her aunt and uncle\, Kidd agrees to escort the child across the harsh and unforgiving plains of Texas. However\, the long journey soon turns into a fight for survival as the traveling companions encounter danger at every turn — both human and natural. \nJanuary’s book is Anxious People by Fredrik Backman\, the very popular author of A Man Called Ove. If you are a Backman fan\, as are several of us in the book group\, you know that this book will be extremely well written and filled with quirky and delightful characters. \nContact Suzanne Adams at sue@gndhome.com for the Zoom link and to be added to the book group email list.

SUMMARY:North Parish Book/Movie Group
DESCRIPTION:The Book of Longings by Sue Monk Kidd \nThis is the story of a young woman named Ana. Raised in a wealthy family with ties to the ruler of Galilee\, she is  rebellious and ambitious\, with a brilliant mind and a daring spirit. She engages in furtive scholarly pursuits and writes  narratives about neglected and silenced women. Ana is expected to marry an older widower\, a prospect that horrifies  her. An encounter with eighteen-year-old Jesus changes everything. Their marriage evolves with love and conflict\,  humor and pathos in Nazareth\, where Ana makes a home with Jesus\, his brothers\, and their mother\, Mary. Ana’s pent up longings intensify amid the turbulent resistance to Rome’s occupation of Israel\, partially led by her brother\, Judas.  She is sustained by her fearless aunt Yaltha\, who harbors a compelling secret. When Ana commits a brazen act that puts  her in peril\, she flees to Alexandria\, where startling revelations and greater dangers unfold\, and she finds refuge in  unexpected surroundings. Ana determines her fate during a stunning convergence of events considered among the most  impactful in human history.  \nContact is Suzanne Adams\, sue@gndhome.com

SUMMARY:Climate Justice Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nAll are welcome to join the Climate Justice Group as we discuss The Overstory by Richard Powers. Published in 2018 The book is about five trees whose unique life experiences with nine Americans bring them together to address the destruction of forests. It was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 2019. \n“The best book I’ve read in 10 years. It’s a remarkable piece of literature\, and the moment it speaks to is climate change. So\, for me\, it’s a lodestone. It’s a mind-opening fiction\, and it connects us all in a very positive way to the things that we have to do if we want to regain our planet.”\n― Emma Thompson \nRSVP to climatejustice@northparish.org

SUMMARY:Refugee Conversations- Lillian's Journey
DESCRIPTION:The Merrimack Valley Interfaith Sanctuary Network (MVISN)\, Merrimack Valley Project\, and Solidarity Lowell present a ZOOM conversation with Lillian\, a refugee from Ecuador. Host Cantor Vera Broekhuysen will lead the conversation with Lillian\, who will discuss her journey from Ecuador\, through Mexico and into the U.S.\, and the racism and sexism that she experienced in those countries. We will also hear about her experiences crossing the border and in ICE detention facilities. RSVP here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/lillians-journey-tickets-170508641938 \nFrom Lillian: “I am from Ecuador. I am Afro-Ecuadorian but unfortunately in my country being Black is still a synonym of slavery\, discrimination and disrespect to the Black people. As a Black Afro-Ecuadorian I have suffered a lot of injustice such as discrimination\, bullying\, and abuse. I finally left my country definitely to Mexico and made my way to the United States to look for peace and protection.” \nLillian is in need of funds for her asylum case and winter clothes (size small) or gift cards to clothing stores. Her favorite colors are white\, blue\, and pink. To coordinate a drop-off\, please email mvisn@solidaritylowell.com. \nContact Reverend Lee for more information \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:North Parish Book Group will discuss the movie "Roma"
DESCRIPTION:In keeping with book group tradition\, we are alternating books and easily accessible movies for our meetings 7:00 to 8:00 pm the second Wednesday of each month during the church year. For the foreseeable future\, we are meeting via Zoom. Those who wish to join us are asked to read the books or see the movies on their own time. “Roma”\, which is set in the 1970s Mexico. From its opening frames to its closing ones\, it is a masterpiece of cinematic technique\, the story of a well-off family told through the eyes of its indigenous maid (Yalitza Aparicio). For a while\, the film seems like it will be principally an exercise in visual storytelling. But before it runs its course\, Roma will nail you to your seat. It will shock you. It will break your heart and then put it back together again. You will not see a better picture this year. \nNovember’s 10’s book is “The Book of Longings” by Sue Monk Kidd\, the fictional story of a young woman named Ana\, Judas’ sister\, who marries eighteen year old Jesus and moves in with his family. \nWe have a small but loyal group who join us each month and would love to welcome more to join our discussions. Email Suzanne Adams to be included and receive the Zoom link.
