SUMMARY:Monthly meeting of North Parish book/movie group
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the North Parish book/movie group.  We meet on the fourth Wednesday of the month from September to June. For more information and to obtain a Zoom link to the meetings\, please email BookClub@northparish.org. \nThe June movie selection is West Side Story – 54 copies in library Steven Spielberg films his cast against a gritty\, semi-realistic backdrop (complete with lens flares!)\, and we watch\, awed\, as the characters dance\, and sing\, and ultimately suffer horrible tragedies. There’s a cruelty to “West Side Story\,” as it’s ultimately the story of love that cannot survive in a violent\, hostile environment. As Anita sings\, “Life can be bright in America.” But not for these characters. But there’s plenty of life here\, too. In fact\, this is one of the most-alive movies in recent memory\, and one of Spielberg’s best\, too. And that’s saying something.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the North Parish book/movie group.  We meet on the fourth Wednesday of the month from September to June. For more information and to obtain a Zoom link to the meetings\, please email BookClub@northparish.org. \nThe May movie selection is The Accidental Tourist by Anne Tyler – 355 pages – 12 copies in library system This 1985 novel by Anne Tyler that was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction in 1985 and the Ambassador Book Award for Fiction in 1986. The novel was adapted into a 1988 award-winning film starring William Hurt\, Kathleen Turner\, and Geena Davis\, for which Davis won an Academy Award. Macon Leary is a travel writer who hates both travel and anything out of the ordinary. He is grounded by loneliness and an unwillingness to compromise his creature comforts when he meets Muriel\, a deliciously peculiar dog-obedience trainer who up-ends Macon’s insular world and thrusts him headlong into a remarkable engagement with life.

For more information and to obtain a Zoom link to the meetings\, please email BookClub@northparish.org. \nThe March book selection is Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger – 307 pages – 23 copies in library system\, 2 holds Frank begins the season preoccupied with the concerns of any teenage boy\, but when tragedy unexpectedly strikes his family—which includes his Methodist minister father; his passionate\, artistic mother; Juilliard-bound older sister; and wise-beyond-his-years kid brother—he finds himself thrust into an adult world full of secrets\, lies\, adultery\, and betrayal\, suddenly called upon to demonstrate a maturity and gumption beyond his years. Told from Frank’s perspective forty years after that fateful summer\, Ordinary Grace is a brilliantly moving account of a boy standing at the door of his young manhood\, trying to understand a world that seems to be falling apart around him.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the North Parish book/movie group.  We meet on the fourth Wednesday of the month from September to June. For more information and to obtain a Zoom link to the meetings\, please email BookClub@northparish.org. \nJanuary’s book selection is All That She Carried: The Journey of Ashley’s Sack\, a Black Family Keepsake by Tiya Miles – 385 pages\, 29 copies in library system\, 3 holds Sitting in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture is a rough cotton bag\, called “Ashley’s Sack\,” embroidered with just a handful of words that evoke a sweeping family story of loss and of love passed down through generations. In 1850s South Carolina\, just before nine-year-old Ashley was sold\, her mother\, Rose\, gave her a sack filled with just a few things as a token of her love. Decades later\, Ashley’s granddaughter\, Ruth\, embroidered this history on the bag–including Rose’s message that “It be filled with my Love always.” Historian Tiya Miles follows the paths their lives and the lives of so many like them took to write a unique\, innovative history of the lived experience of slavery in the United States. As she follows Ashley’s journey\, Miles metaphorically “unpacks” the sack\, deepening its emotional resonance and revealing the meanings and significance of everything it contained. All That She Carried won of the National Book Award in 2021 for Nonfiction.

DESCRIPTION:The Jane Austen Society by Natalie Jenner \nJust after the Second World War\, in the small English village of Chawton\, an unusual but like-minded group of people  band together to attempt something remarkable. One hundred and fifty years ago\, Chawton was the final home of Jane  Austen\, one of England’s finest novelists. Now it’s home to a few distant relatives and their diminishing estate. With the  last bit of Austen’s legacy threatened\, a group of disparate individuals come together to preserve both Jane Austen’s  home and her legacy. As each of them endures their own quiet struggle with loss and trauma\, some from the recent  \nwar\, others from more distant tragedies\, they rally together to create the Jane Austen Society. A powerful and moving  novel that explores the tragedies and triumphs of life\, both large and small\, and the universal humanity in us all. \nPlease contact Suzanne Adams for Zoom info\, sue@gndhome.com \n

DESCRIPTION:Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer \nDrawing on her life as an indigenous scientist\, and as a woman\, Kimmerer shows how other living beings―asters and  goldenrod\, strawberries and squash\, salamanders\, algae\, and sweetgrass―offer us gifts and lessons\, even if we’ve  forgotten how to hear their voices. In reflections that range from the creation of Turtle Island to the forces that threaten  its flourishing today\, she circles toward a central argument: that the awakening of ecological consciousness requires the  acknowledgment and celebration of our reciprocal relationship with the rest of the living world. For only when we can  hear the languages of other beings will we be capable of understanding the generosity of the earth\, and learn to give our  own gifts in return.  \nContact is Suzanne Adams\, sue@gndhome.com

DESCRIPTION:Anxious People by Fredrik Backman \nLooking at real estate isn’t usually a life-or-death situation\, but an apartment open house becomes just that when a  failed bank robber bursts in and takes a group of strangers hostage. The captives include a recently retired couple who  relentlessly hunt down fixer-uppers to avoid the painful truth that they can’t fix their own marriage. There’s a wealthy  bank director who has been too busy to care about anyone else and a young couple who are about to have their first  child but can’t seem to agree on anything\, from where they want to live to how they met in the first place. Add to the  mix an eighty-seven-year-old woman who has lived long enough not to be afraid of someone waving a gun in her face\, a  flustered but still-ready-to-make-a-deal real estate agent\, and a mystery man who has locked himself in the apartment’s  only bathroom\, and you’ve got the worst group of hostages in the world. As the authorities and the media surround the  premises these reluctant allies will reveal surprising truths about themselves and set in motion a chain of events so  unexpected that even they can hardly explain what happens next.  \nContact is Suzanne Adams\, sue@gndhome.com
