Dear North Parish,
On Sunday January 26th, while Jennifer Recklet-Tassi was preaching about multicultural families, I attended the Chinmaya Mission Hindu temple in Andover at the invitation of my friend Sujatha Thiruvengadathan. Some of our youth have visited Chinmaya as part of their Neighboring Faiths program, but in 15 years I’d never been inside the temple.
Over two hours, I saw some children’s performances in celebration of India’s Republic Day, attended an adult study group, joined the community for their weekly free lunch and saw the worship space (seen here, with the monkey god Hanuman in the background.) I felt very welcome and hope to return on a Tuesday night to observe puja, a ritual of prayer, offerings and bathing of the god.
UUism and Hinduism both believe in freedom of belief and worship. For more on UU-Hindu connections, check out the online writings by the Revs. Abhi Janamanchi and Manish Mishra-Marzetti, who are both Hindu-UU ministers. Since you can be both Hindu and UU, I’m interested in re-learning my Hinduism basics!
I hope you are all well,
